I have recently got anxiety over the smallest things in the world, it is unbelievable. Things that I used to do with my eyes closed and hands behind my back have suddenly taken a turn and I hate it. How did you overcome anxiety without medication? I couldnt stand going on medication.
Anxiety is a message from your body to readjust you current path or way of being and your not listening to that massage. Just as pain is a message that your body give to the brain to react, the subconscious also sends messages to the brain to react.
The first thing to do is simplify your life until you feel more calm. We live in a fast paced world and it is easy to become overwhelmed by too much information and too much responsibilities. Next, you need to keep you attention on the hear and now and get out of the past and stay out of the future. It is true that you must make planes for the future but you write those plans down and concentrate on the actions that must be done first. You take one thing and one day at a time. Thirdly, stop competing with others. Competition is the reason why we must over consume with useless materialism. Press yourself to find your own bliss but dont push yourself to be something that your not. Learn to accept things as the are now and build a new blissful fulfilling life from scratch. Become a better listener to your friends and complain less to them. They will need more as they come to depend upon you and your new understanding.
Stop being hard on yourself. No one is as hard on you as you are yourself. When you go to sleep at night turn off the mind chatter by putting your attention on your breath. Relax all the mussels on your face, neck and shoulders. Thing of things during the day that make you happy. Find a way to become more healthy. As your feelings go your mind will adjust so take care of your health and your mind will reflect the fit body.

This has to be a quicky, because I don't know how long I can rely on this unsecured network. Luckilly, Verizon will be installing DSL and FIOS TV. I can hardly wait.
It's been quit an adventure living back in the house. Just being in the house itself is exciting enough, but the Marcus came along at the very same time. Lots of stress, enough stress to send me spiraling down into depression again. They say even good stress can affect you. Well, having Marcus and being in the house are good stressors, but there are still plenty of bad ones too.
When we had the water turned on, there was a virtual water fountain in the pool bath. I turned the water to that toilet off right away and bought parts to fix it, but never got around to it. Joey continues to use it regardless. I've asked him to at least pour a bucket of water in to flush it down that way, but you know how boys listen to their mothers. Not very well. Well, I finally fixed it after today's events.
Christina comes home from school and reports that her toilet is leaking water, the hall carpet is wet and all the smoke alarms in the house are going off. Joe told her over the phone how to turn the toilet off. So I come home to all the smoke alarms blaring, and water leaking through Joey's ceiling. **sigh** I disconnected the smoke alarm in Joey's room and the rest of them went off. I had Christina wet vac the hall carpet and I dried off the ceiling as best I could. This prompted me to repair Joey's toilet. Now I just need to get parts for Christina's toilet.
All this excitement was just today. There has been lots more excitement. I shall go into more detail when I get a more secure network. Ta ta for now.

those of you who know me, even if only to nod to in the street, probable know that im a former member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, or the Mormons. well, one thing i miss about the life i led when i was mormon was the constant giving my family did. we didnt have a whole lot (not that we do now, either), but we were always making jam, or grape juice, or bottling or canning something, or sewing, needlepointing, cross-stitching, or making up emergency kits and then giving them away. the 12 days of christmas was a big deal in our house; we would prepare for it, and enjoy it, more than we prepared for christmas itself. we would gather small homemade gifts, usually useful things, or objects of creature comfort, and we would leave something on a doorstep, then ding-dong-ditch the family we had chosen for 12 nights in a row.
now that i describe it, i realize it was maybe a little creepy all around, but it was way more fun than toilet-papering. we never got caught, and we never admitted to it, to the best of my recall. that secrecy and forceful giving generated some of my best memories, and i would live off of the rush for weeks. i would look forward to it more than i did to the receipt of gifts on christmas day, counting down the days until our next as i thought of them. i miss it terribly.
this morning, i got a chance to get back a little of the magic, though the anonymity isnt as present this time. my moms boyfriend is an insurance agent, and one of his clients needs some help. im hazy on the details, but i gather that there are two adults and a 12 year old child. they traveled up here to take care of an ailing relative, i believe, but upon arriving at the womans fathers house, were told that they couldnt possibly stay in the family home, because theyre not married.
i call BULLSHIT on you, sir, and i slap your face with my flappety glove of justice, and challenge you to a duel.
what is marriage but the paperwork? what is marriage but the legislation of human relationships? marriage does not equate to love, nor love to marriage. marriage does not mean a faithful, supportive, or financially solvent relationship. marriage does not mean maternity or paternity, and it should not be used as a wedge between family members.
my mom caught flak from her born-again twin sister when my moms boyfriend moved in. holding aside my feelings about this (as much as i can), i find it odd that someone who shared the womb with you could cast such ridiculous aspersions on your intelligence and integrity. but i digress.
i enjoyed packing up cooking utensils, coffee, hot cocoa, salt, sugar, matches, candles, toilet paper, sleeping bags, towels, etc., for this family. and they are a family, for those of you who would challenge me. they are each others only family right now. we will be getting them started at a local campground later today. i hope to gather things for them that will give them comfort, in addition to things that will help them survive.
for those of you whod like it, therell be another, (hopefully) less angry post tonight, and ill try to keep you updated on the family in question.
and i hope that if, before you read this, you were alienating a member of your family, that you STOP. because for shits sake, isnt there enough being thrown at us without our family being catapaults?
im no longer a practicing mormon, but id like to think of myself as a practicing human. and practicing is all we can do. otherwise, how do we expect to get good at it?
so yes, giving is a rush for me. but i guess its safer than crack.

They have spent millions on determining that Social anxiety Disorder is a deformation of the eighth chromosome and that the result of the malformation causes interference in the serotonin transporter cells and the serotonin receptor cells. Also that the condition known in Japan as Taijin Kyofusho is the Asian equivalent to SAD.
Now why bother to spend all those resources on a disease that they have no intention of treating anyways?
Sometimes when they lay a concrete foundation you cant really tell what kind of building they are going to build.
This is just one of many stepping stones to building a genetic probability matrix on every human being. When you can do that you can then do many things. Deny health care to a individual who will most likely die young from heart disease no matter what you do. Incarcerate someone who has a high possibility of becoming violent. Label someone a murderer as they lie in the crib. The list is endless.
It also raises the question of free will vs genetic destiny.
Rent the movie Minority Report.
Some will think that these things cant happen, but they can. If I can think it, so can someone else someone with more power than me.
DaVinci was persecuted for his ideas as well.

As housing prices continue to fall and more and more homeowners are faced with negative equity or "underwater" positions, banks that hold second mortgage and equity line portfolios may soon feel a crushing blow. Zillow.com reported today that 21.8 percent of all U.S homes -- more than 16 million residences -- owed more on their home than the home was worth. Some say Zillow's computations are a bit high, but even Moody's Economy.com puts that number at 14.8 million underwater as of the end of March.
How does this impact the banks and credit unions? All banks and credit unions that hold second mortgages or equity lines on homes underwater are likely to lose a large portion if not all the money at stake. When a bank forecloses on a house underwater, the back taxes get paid first, then the first mortgage hold gets paid. The holder of a second mortgage or equity line only gets paid only if there is money left over.

I stopped sugarine cold-turkey about dual months ago since of the disastrous mental goods and inclination to cavities even when brushing and flossing 3 times a day. I right away eat sugar-free equipment (example: in a day, I might eat 1/2 crater of sugar-free ice thickk thickk thickk cream after cooking and may be dual sugar-free caramels for a mid-morning snack). As a result, my mental and dental ills have disappeared. Will eating sugar-free means me any harm, in the prolonged term? (The synthetic sweeteners in these products usually means amiable gas on singular occasions, but not sufficient to notice).
Since you do this, I have mislaid about 2 pounds in 8 weeks, but trying.
I additionally no longer have the mental obsession to candy which I did. (for example, I have found which one sugar-free ice thickk thickk thickk cream club is enough, but when I was eating ice thickk thickk thickk cream bars with sugar, I would wish some-more and more.

Older adults with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) had greater improvements in measures of worry, depression and mental health when they received cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), according to a study published in the April 8, 2009 issue of JAMA.
GAD is common among the elderly, said the report, with a prevalence of 7.3% among the community and 11.2% in primary care.
Melinda A. Stanley, Pd.D. and her her colleagues at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, conducted a trial evaluating CBT as a treatment for GAD in later life. The trial included 134 older adults, with an average age of 67 years, in two primary care settings, with treatment being administered over a period of three months.
Patients randomly assigned to the cognitive behavioral therapy group received education and awareness, relaxation training, cognitive therapy, problem-solving skills training and behavioral sleep management. Usual care patients receive phone calls on a biweekly basis during the first three months of the study to provide support and ensure patient safety. These patients were reminded to contact a staff member if their symptoms worsened.
The patients were assessed at the beginning of the trial, immediately after the cessation of treatment at three months, and over 12 months of followup, with assessments occurring at 6, 9, 12 and 15 months.
When levels of anxiety, worry, depression and physical and mental health quality of life were measured, the team found that CBT significantly improved these measures compared to usual care.
"This study," the authors wrote, "is the first to suggest that CBT can be useful for managing worry and associated symptoms among older patients in primary care.

Tell me a little about yourself?
Basically, Im a 30-something year old financial professional. I grew up in the North shore in Byfield, Mass. I do music shows, Im on the MASSCANN/NORML board of directors, and I book the music for the annual Freedom Rally [on the Boston Common].
How did you get involved with MASSCANN/NORML?
Probably a lot like other people; reading High Times growing up and going to the Freedom Rally. I went to a couple of the first years they had it when I was in college and I ended up coming back. I was helping a friend of mine who was in a band trying to book their band for the Freedom Rally and I just ended up in a meeting and decided I wanted to help out and Ive been doing it ever since. Basically, what we do is we try to let people know what going on with marijuana reform and how they can help. With MASSCANN/NORML we started out with 50 non-binding decriminalization and medical marijuana initiatives and we won every one.
What does marijuana reform mean to you?
I think the big thing is to make sure that people arent arrested is number one. Its always been the big issue for me that peoples lives get ruined over one joint. I think bigger than that, the drug war itself and the crime, its just to make the world a better place. One of the biggest things I try to bring to this is that weve always focused on people who are users of marijuana which is fine and great, but there are also a majority out there that dont use marijuana that also support us, and thats what you saw with the vote [on Question 2] is that of the 65% that voted for marijuana decriminalization and at least half of those that voted for it are non-users. I think that he war on marijuana users and the drug war effects all people whether you use or not and I think thats a big message Im trying to get out there.
Marijuana is often referred to as a drug, do you think this is a misnomer?
Absolutely, I smoked pot but I never did heroin, I never had a problem with any of those other things. Obviously theres always that one person, but that person also drank milk, and Im sure they drank beer first and we dont try to outlaw beer cause of other drugs like heroin. It doesnt make any sense and scientifically it is shown it is not a gateway [drug].
Are you a medical or casual user?
Both. Im a former athlete; I was an amateur wrestler. Ive got a bad back. I probably needed surgery about 10 years ago and I didnt go for it. Ive just been dealing with Ziatica. Ive always enjoyed it too so Im not going to say I dont enjoy it or even use it. Even if I was pain free tomorrow, I still think Id smoke pot.
How long have you been using?
[Laughter] I tried it when I was in high school but wasnt really a smoker because I was an athlete. I pretty much stayed away from it, you know, I tried it quite a few times in high school, but I never really was a regular user until I got to college. I used to get these migraines, and I lived next to a kid who always had it and if I had a migraine Id talk to him and it would work and I discovered that it not only work but I liked it and enjoyed it.
How does pot affect you?
Not much, the biggest thing for me is if Im out 5 or 6 hours at a show, working and I come home and I cant sleep cause my back hurts I have two choices; I can take a Tylenol, which will work, or I can smoke a joint. And if I smoke a joint, for me, it makes me feel better than if I take a Tylenol cause I know that my father has the same condition as me and he just had a liver transplant and Im convinced its from 25 years of taking Tylenol. Doctors tell you, Yeah, this is going to kill your liver. For me personally, it allows me to moderate my Tylenol use. In general, it doesnt do too much for me, especially compared to the drugs they wanted to put me on.
What negative effects have you seen from marijuana use?
The big thing is that its illegal; so therefore, by people using it in an illegal market it creates black markets and I think theres some violence associated with that, so thats one negative. I also think anything you smoke is generally not a good thing so obviously smoking cannabis may not be the best thing for your lungs and may not be the best thing health-wise. Obviously, I think some people have problems with substances whether its chocolate or alcohol or tobacco or marijuana. For some people, it takes over their lives like anything else so I think like any other substance out there that people like and enjoy, for some people, its an issue.
Whats up with Scott Brown and his re-criminalization tirade?
Yeah... yeah...[laughter] Scott Brown is a Republican in the state and is supporting a bill that would fine anyone $1000 for marijuana in the car. It doesnt matter if youre using it or not, whether youre sober or not, medical user or not, its basically a blanket law that would charge $1000 and if its not paid then it would be a criminal offense. Which to me is de facto re-criminalization. A lot of people are not going to be aware of it and not be able pay $1100 in fines within the 30 days theyre probably going to require if this becomes law. There are a lot of us out there who dont like it so we decided to stage a protest next Tuesday night at his next campaign fundraiser.
What positive things can you see coming with the approval of medical marijuana?
The big thing is someone like Marcy Duda, whos a grandmother, whos been testifying for years at the state house to be able to get legal marijuana. Marcy has a brain aneurisms and she testified last year that she had two sisters with the same medical condition, neither one of them used medical marijuana and both of them are dead right now and she credits marijuana with saving her life. Someone like her would be able to either have someone grow some plants for her or grow them herself. That would be the big thing, that someone like Marcy would have access to medicine and not have to go to the black market, not be at risk for arrest and be able to get good cannabis to help her relive her daily pain.
Of legalization?
Ending the black market, taking corruption out of our government. Ive become more conservative as Ive grown older and people dont necessarily assume that being a marijuana reform advocate. I think thats a big thing you get from law and order people, is that theres no respect for the law, and theres a reason why theres no respect for the law. The law is unjust and it doesnt make any sense. When you put these illegal drug gangs out of business and at the same time, get rid of the biggest law out there that people dont respect, I think that people might actually start to respect the law again and get much more good will for police out there.
How will Americans react to marijuana regulation?
I think that most Americans would be fine with it. I think even the ones that pose against us right now, once it happens I think they will be totally happy with it just like they were when alcohol prohibition was repealed. Its been proven--and this is another big thing I like to being up, especially with people who are against changing the law-- other count and other states, if you look at Amsterdam, have lower use among adults and youth because its regulated. You look at neighboring countries that have laws similar to the U.S. and they have higher rates of use. Its the same thing in America in the states where its decriminalized, were not seeing higher rates of use, and were actually seeing lower rates of use. When you legalize it theres kind of a taboo factor, outlaw factor, that goes away and its not as exciting anymore.
What types of obstacles and opposition are reformers facing with these bills?
Our biggest obstacles are the politicians themselves. Every single year weve had hearings on this and we bring out a lot of medical users from Massachusetts to speak at these and the last year, for instance, the bill actually passed the committee, we had a vote on committee level, and we won the vote and it should have gone to a full house vote but it never did. The politicians are too scared to be on the record one way or another, theyre too scared to make the 65% (which is more like 80% for medical), theyre worried about making them upset by voting against medical. On the other hand, theyre worried about small percentage like police union, jails, the district attorney, on the other side are worried about making those folks upset that also fund their campaigns. Were kind of stuck where were really trying to get the politicians to let us have a vote on medical marijuana and we think it will win if it comes to a vote with a full house but thats our biggest obstacle, to actually get them to allow us to get this to come to a vote.
Whats the best way to get involved with marijuana reform?
I would say if youre a college student, start or join a NORML chapter or student policy chapter. Also, if youre just regular person, same thing, I would look out for NORML chapter and probably attend the meetings to see how you can help out there. Beyond that, I would say there are a lot of things you can do. Whether you show up to the Scott Brown rally for instance, showing up with a video camera and recording it, putting it up on YouTube, writing about it. I always tell people that it really depends on who you are what you want to do. There are so many ways you can get involved; its about taking the way will keep you interested.

Anxiety is a normal reaction to fear, but sometimes, its severity gets out of proportion, and starts interfering with daily life. Anxiety is more often than not accompanied with depression, and it is important to understand that these are serious medical illnesses and need medication or therapy. Anxiety disorder gives intense feelings of worry and fear, often associated with specific events, situations or objects. Some of the common physical symptoms of anxiety are nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, heart palpitations, trembling and diarrhea.
Treating Anxiety With Therapy
Treatment for anxiety depends on the makeup of disorder and characteristics of individual patients. Most of the patients respond well to cognitive and behavioral anxiety therapy. In behavioral therapy, the patient learns to deal with the attack rather than running away from it. The person confronts the situation several times with the help of a supportive friend or a therapist.
Using conventional anxiety psychotherapy, the patient talks out the problem with the therapist, and this can be quite beneficial.
Cognitive anxiety therapy is learning new ways and methods to alter the old habits and thinking patterns. Suffering will continue as long as the person keeps expecting the worst, and anxiety therapy conditions the mind to think and respond in a different manner. A number of the effective cognitive anxiety therapy techniques include stopping automatic negative thinking, slowing down, helpful and rational self-statements, moving up the self-statements, getting more focused and addressing anger, setbacks, perfectionism, and frustrations.
De-stressing and relaxation can be quite helpful to deal with anxiety. When the brain is calm and quiet, the anxiety therapy techniques are more effective, and results are better. Using emotional anxiety therapy, the focal point is on calmness and peace, and as the mind becomes more and more peaceful and calm, the fears and anxieties are crowded out easily. Focus of such techniques is never on fears and anxieties, but on healing, inner peace and healthiness.
Using Music
Music has been called the food for soul, and it has been used in mental hospitals in various parts of the worlds to reduce stress and anxiety in patients. It is a great anxiety therapy, and can be quite helpful in treating any kind of mental illness. Music helps the production of endorphins, and they relieve the physical and mental discomfort naturally. Music has the ability to make us happy, and enhancing the physical and mental well-being.
Prescription Drugs
In addition to anxiety therapy, there are several medications that can be helpful to treat anxiety disorders, and these medications include sertraline, Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, Celexa, Effexor, imipramine, Elavor, Anafranil, Tofranil, Anafranil, Xanaxm Valium, BuSpar and certain cardiac drugs.

I learned while I was there that even in moments of deep depression, I have the ability to use discretion, sort out what are my issues and what belongs to someone else, size up a situation with relatively clear accuracy, stand up for what I believe in and what I feel that I need, and take care of myself. I will not go into detail on this and how that realization came to be because that is private, confidential information, but I had that epiphany. We often do not realize exactly how strong we are and how much we care for ourselves until these moments present themselves and require us to act on our own behalf to save our lives. Though I felt suicidal, I did not want to die. Had I really wanted to die, I would not have gone to Timberlawn. I was surprised by my own reaction. I wouldve predicted I couldnt do that. I wouldve guessed I wouldve laid down and apathetically zoned out into Victim Land, but I did not, and I learned I am much stronger than I give myself credit for. I am a survivor.
I realized that, although I have some issues along the Borderline track, I do not have a Borderline Personality Disorder. My therapist here at home will argue that, but in the two hospital stays I have been through this month, I have seen my share of Borderline and I am not it. Even my therapist and psychiatrist at Timberlawn both commented I did not meet the criteria for Borderline and recommended that I get a thorough evaluation if need be to my current therapist at home. I will not do that. I could care less. Let her think what she thinks, but I agree that I most likely am not Borderline. My treatment team at Timberlawn said that I am entirely too dialectical to be Borderline. I have excellent interpersonal relationship skills, and where I do meet the , it is better explained by another diagnosis. For example: Severe dissociative symptomsduh, I have DID. Chronic feelings of emptiness..duh, I have Major Depression. Issues with attachment and perceived abandonment..quite common in people with DID/Chronic PTSD, so could we all have BPD as well?? Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats. Self-mutilating behavior. Isnt that part of a major depressive episode??? And if I have any problems with identity, well.we can thank DID for that one as well. Those are the 5 out of 9 that I have which my therapist at home claims a diagnosis of BPD. Well, heres what I am going to say about that. She has a right to her own professional/personal opinion. She thinks what she thinks, and I think what I think. We can agree to disagree on this issue. Afterall, we will not agree on everything.
I learned a lot about feelings and emotions. I learned how absolutely natural they are to our existence, and I fear them less. Each time I go to Timberlawn I feel better about feeling. One of the therapists did this whole lesson on emotions, and I will try to recreate that here so I can share it, but I will most certainly not do it justice! I wish I could get her to come be a guest author and write it for me. However, I will attempt to put it in my own words and pass it on to you. That will have to be a separate post entirely.
As you know I was just beginning the trauma work phase of my treatment when all Hell broke loose. My therapist and I had started working on the trauma timeline and just working on it ten minutes once in session, sent members of my system into desperate acts to stop the process. Well, while at Timberlawn I was able to work on that with agreement from the system in a safe place where I knew I had others to lean on and look out for me. I am really proud that I got that accomplished. I am not sure if I will share that here or not. It is something I will have to think about.
After completing the timeline, I was beginning to really be able to see the dynamics of my family and life circumstances and how everything seemed to play a part in where I am today. I began to see how interactive it all is. Its not that I had an unresponsive mother. Its not that my father was an alcoholic. Its not that I was sexually abused. Its not the medical trauma I experienced. It is the combination of the whole thing. It is the layout, the timing, the interactions of all things at in my life that led to where I am today. Sort of like when people say things like, When the stars all line up at degree angleblah, blah, blah. Its the whole, not any one thing, and not each thing separately, but the whole picture and the dynamics of it ALL that speaks volumes to me now. I am becoming a family systems theorist now. LOL.. I laugh, but it is true. The whole really is greater than the sum of its parts. (Did I just say that????? I just had a thought I will not share.a wee, epiphany about integration, but I will keep that to myself. -wink-)
On a sad note, I realized that I switch a lot more than I care to admit, and that the episodes of switching last longer than I care to admit. They effect me more than I like to admit. The saddest of all??? I lost 3 months to Depression and DID. The last grounding/solid memories I have are of when my husband went into the hospital in late December. I have lost Christmas, January, February, and March. I do not plan to miss April or May, and will just have to take things as they come. The best I can do, is the best I can do.

Im asking because Ive been taking ativan for years and it didnt seem very effective for panic attacks/tachycardia and long term anxiety, but was okay for short acute symptoms; however I needed to take stronger doses of it for it to work. It also produced more of a drowsy/tiredweak body syndrome.
Xanax however, seemed to work much much quicker, and for whatever reason its effects lingered more. It seemed to completely stop any panic disorder/anxiety/tachycardia right in its place, and gave me more of a mental calm, and my body wasnt as affected as much.
Ativan seems to be more of a muscle/whole body relaxant, more so than a mental/mind anxiety/panic treatment,
whereas Xanax seems to be better for being a chill pill.
Any ideas? Any other drugs in the same class more effective, etc?
Xanax is the best benzodiazapine in my opinion for panic attacks. It is very calming and sedating and it provides a euphoric feeling that helps combat overwhelming anxiety. Contrary to what some psychiatrists prescribe, no benzodiazapine is meant for long-term use. After about a week of daily doses of Xanax, I didnt even notice any effects after taking it. In between doses I would oftentimes get rebound anxiety, too.
I think Paxil, Effexor, and Buspar are all better option for long-term management of anxiety. Benzodiazapines are best reserved for sudden panic attacks or short-term management of anxiety.
If for some reason you are convinced you must have a benzodiazapine, then Klonopin is usually the one most psychiatrists prescribe long-term because it is a long-acting benzodiazapine. Because of that you only have to take it twice a day and there remains a much more stable concentration in your blood in comparison to short-acting benzodiazapines like Xanax and Ativan. I disagree with the above answerer suggesting Serax. Serax is essentially a benzodiazapine and has no real advantage.

Oh please, is there no respite from this sort of thing? Over on Pharyngula is this little bit on the Vaticans newest attempt to recruit an ideal priesthood, this time free of gays.
Now, the Catholic Church has done screening for centuries. They actually work hard to dissuade people from attempting to be priests because they know how difficult the various vows are to keep. I dont doubt for a minute that some of this screening is responsible, in kind of an unfortunate unintended consequences way, with the number of child sexual abuse cases that seem rampant more in the Catholic Church than in any other. You screen for people who have sexual proclivities and eliminate the ones who probably wont be able to maintain celibacy, you end up with (probably) a higher percentage of those who exhibit a lower than average normal sex drive (however you decide to define that), but may have a higher, shall we say, alternative proclivity
Anyway, thats just my opinion. But apparently the Vatican has decided theres something to looking at alternative sexualities as a deal breaker, but for goodness sake the question still needs to be asked, just what is it they find so offensive and, we assume, dangerous about gays?
By and large, the Catholic Church, for all its faults, possesses one of the more sophisticated philosophical approaches to life in all its manifestations among the various sects. As a philosophy teacher of mine said once, they seem to have a handle on what life is all about. Despite the very public embarrassments that emerge from the high profile conservative and reactionary elements within it, the Catholic Church probably has the healthiest worldview of the lot. (I was a Lutheran in my childhood and believe me, in the matter of guilt the Catholics have nothing on Lutherans.)
But they have been electing popes who seem bent on turning the clock back to a more intolerant and altogether less sophisticated age, as if the burden of dealing with humanity in its manifold variation is just too much for them. They pine for the days when priests could lay down the law and the parish would snap to. They do not want to deal with humanity in the abstract because it means abandoning certain absolutesor the concretein lieu of a more gestalt understanding. It would be hard work.
And they have an image problem. I mean, if youre going to let people be people, then whats the point of joining an elite group when there are no restrictions of the concept of what encompasses human?
But reallythis is just embarrassing.
