found that certain polyphenols from green and black tea were potent inhibitors of the Bcl-2 family of antiapoptotic proteins. Antiapoptotic proteins enable cancer cells to avoid normal cell death. The immortality of cancer cells makes them ultimately lethal to their hosts.
The biomarkers Cardellis team studied included hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and prostate specific antigen (PSA). HGF and VEGF are good prognostic indicators of metastatic disease. PSA is the marker most commonly used to diagnose prostate cancer.
The study included 26 men, aged 41 to 72 years, diagnosed with prostate cancer and scheduled for radical prostatectomy. Patients consumed four capsules of Polyphenon E until the day before surgery. According to Cardelli, the dosage was equivalent to about 12 cups of normally brewed green tea. The duration of the study for 25 of the 26 patients ranged from 12 days to 73 days, with a median time of 34.5 days.
Findings showed a significant reduction in serum levels of HGF, VEGF and PSA after treatment, with some patients demonstrating reductions in levels of greater than 30 percent, according to the researchers.
Alluding to the fact that the trials were not randomized, William G. Nelson, V., M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology, urology and pharmacology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, MD, remarked, this trial is provocative enough to consider a more substantial randomized trial. Nelson is also a senior editor for Cancer Prevention Research.
The same researchers are collaborating in a study being performed at Columbia University (New York, NY) to study the effects of polyphenols on breast cancer patients.
There is reasonably good evidence that many cancers are preventable, and our studies using plant-derived substances support the idea that plant compounds found in a healthy diet can play a role in preventing cancer development and progression, Cardelli said.

I take brazilian jiu-jitsu. I have gotten numerous fungus infections from the sport. A real down side. I am 39 and I have always had super thick hair. Recently I did a 3 month pulse pack of itraconazole (sporanox). I go to get my hair cut and like half of my head is missing hair about 50% of its hair. It has been like 4 weeks since the haircut. Seems like I have a bit of regrowth but there are some parts that still seem thin.
My doctors offered three explanations
1. Medicine could have knocked it out.
2. There was fungus in my hair I did not know about and once again medicine knocked it out.
3. I am 39 and I am finally losing my hair.
It seems weird to me to suddenly be losing hair at this age, and to lose it so suddenly. He has told me to wait and see what happens for about 3 months and then make a decision on wether or not to start propecia. What are you thoughts on this situation.

"Judeo-Christian" is the great religious shibboleth of post-World War II American religion. I (modestly) should know, because I wrote the book on it--well, the article anyway: "Notes on the Judeo-Christian Tradition in America," American Quarterly, 1984. It came into use during the war as a way of including Jews in the American religious thing, and after the war was on the tongues of politicians from Dwight Eisenhower on down. In that sense, it is of a piece with "In God We Trust," which became the national motto in the same era. More recently, it has come to be the special province of religious conservatives like Rep. King, while those more inclusively inclined reach for terms like Abrahamic (i.e. Christian, Jewish, and Muslim).

To the extent that "Judeo-Christian" signifies actual religious history, it surely includes the species of slave labor that went into building the pyramids, or whatever it was that the Egyptians put the resident Israelites to work building--and the great importance attached to remembering that hard labor prior to the Exodus.

The nurturing of your mares health is not easy for the untrained eye. The reality of the situation is horses have no ability to tell you whats wrong with them can they? So the only way the horse owner can provide adequate health care for your equine friend is by using a keen eye.
This is especially true when it comes to equine arthritis and horse arthritis symptoms. So what things can you keep an eye on that could suggest your horse has arthritis?
As it is in humans arthritis is afflicts us more as we age. This problem can afflict younger horses however in the greater scheme of things old age is a factor and definitely if your horse is more then 15 years old.
If your animal is showing any sign of joint pain, swelling, grating sounds from the joint areas, lameness or stiffness then there is a high probability your equine has arthritis and need equine athritis treatment.
One of the more prevelant arthritis pain discovered in equines are caused by joint problems along with rheumatoid arthritis or in simpler terms the narrowing of the joint space. The first port of call for alleviating the pain might be to test out non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and some even use intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections.
Call your veterinarian come up with the most helpful pain treatment alternative for your equine. The veterinarain can mostly likely be able to answer any questions about arthritis pain in your horse that have difficulty about.
Equine joint supplements similar to glucosamine chondroitin (that aid with cartilage regeneration and in the maintaining of existing good joints) are also administered to help with degenerative joint disease.
Of course your vet may have to do various tests to uncover the main cause of joint pain swelling of your equine. This can involve extracting the joint fluid from the troubled joint and unlock the mystery under a microscope. You could be surprised to discover that your horse has gout pseudogout inflammation or perhaps an infection caused by the swelling.
Remember it is best to consult with your veterinarian before treatment begins about the various side effects certain types of treatments might cause and ask about ways you can assist your horse to get well again or have a more comfortable existence if the problem is too bad to heal. Your veterinarian might also have to examine other areas for any soft tissue damage related to the arthritis.
Horse supplements can be purchased easily enough in most towns and perhaps even an online store being your best option for price. In particular if you have to use the treatment on a recurring basis.
In conclusion your horse is just like humans when it comes to arthritis pain with the very same stubborn form of arthritis being osteoarthritis degenerative joint disease and you should get hold of a vet as soon as possible for the best anti-inflammatory drugs to treat the pain.

There are several typical symptoms of hemorrhoids which can be used to determine if one actually has hemorrhoids or not.  It is important to note however, that while there are several symptoms, not all symptoms appear in every individual suffering from hemorrhoids.
Common Symptoms of Hemorrhoids
Rectal bleeding:  This can be one of the very first signs that one has hemorrhoids forming and it can be one of the most disturbing symptoms.Sometimes the bleeding is only slight, but it seems to be a persistent or a regular occurrence. An irritated hemorrhoids is generally what causes bleeding and this is probably the most common and easily recognizable symptom.  Internal hemorrhoids may bleed and this may be the only symptom one develops.  External hemorrhoids might also bleed and sometimes are accompanied by other symptoms of hemorrhoids. If the bleeding is continuous or persistently returns, it is necessary to go and get advice from your local doctor. Hemorrhoids is perhaps the most common causes of rectal bleeding.
Bumps on the anus:  Bumps on the anus are formed when external hemorrhoids develop.  The bumps are actually veins of the anus which have swollen due to the fact that they have filled up with blood.  The bumps may be small, but can become larger over time.
Pain:  Swollen veins in the anus can become incredibly uncomfortable and painful.  To alleviate pain, it will be necessary to minimize the swelling of the area through various hemorrhoid treatment methods.
Itchiness: The area where hemorrhoids form can become incredibly difficult to care for and to clean.Because of this it can become very itchy and irritated.  Proper cleaning methods can aid in reducing symptoms of this nature.
Less Common Symptoms
There are less common symptoms of hemorrhoids that hemorrhoid sufferers should keep an eye out for.  Below are some of the symptoms to keep an eye out for.  If the symptoms develop, it is time to see a doctor to seek out the best treatment for hemorrhoids for you.
Severe Pain:  If an individual develops severe pain, it could be because they are dealing with thrombosed hemorrhoid formations. If the blood inside the hemorrhoid becomes hardened and clotted, this can be a sign that the hemorrhoid itself has becomes thrombosed.  A doctor can help in remedying such issues.
Protrusions: Protrusions form from prolapsed internal hemorrhoids, and it will be necessary to see a doctor to determine the severity of the issue.  Some prolapsed hemorrhoids require removal.
Anal Seepage:  Sometimes hemorrhoids can become so engorged with blood and swollen that the anal sphincter fails to close correctly: the result is seepage of waste material from the anal cavity. If your hemorrhoids are so bad that it is affecting your day-to-day routine then this is the time that you really do need to seek out help.

In a normal sexual intercourse, sexual arousal increases the blood flow to the penis and relaxes the cavernosa muscles as well. The blood fills the sinusoids and penis becomes erect and rigid. This defect in the filling of the blood leads to impotency. Generic Viagra Soft Tabs are specifically designed to combat this problem. It acts by inhibiting PDE-5 which in turn increases the action of nitric oxide and penile erection is maintained.

Last months low-key City of Hagerstown election led to a low-key City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

The four Council members in attendance voted unanimously throughout the evening. The Council agreed to issue $17,999,000 in public facilities bonds which were authorized in November by the previous Council.

But most of the evening was spent approving residential lease agreements for various City-owned properties in Hagerstown, Williamsport and Smithsburg.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, citizens voiced concerns about the amount of time stoplights allow for pedestrians to cross the street and the Historic District Commissions regulations on windows

Landlord Daniel Hammond of Williamsport complained that the Historic District Commission (HDC) would not allow him to install 41 vinyl windows on the sides and in the back of his property on Hamilton Blvd. Wooden windows cost $800 a window. I cant afford that, Hammond said.

Councilwoman Ashley Haywood (I) sympathized with Hammonds situation, but stated that Council could not take any action on the matter due to existing ordinances. Perhaps this HDC policy should be looked at by the Council, Haywood said.

Lester Smith of Hagerstown complained about the length of the stop lights on Burhans Blvd. The lights dont give me enough time to get across the street, he said.

Following the meeting, new Councilman Forrest Easton (R) commented on the responsibilities of the job. I am surprised by the amount of day-to-day items which are discussed by the Council, he said.

In Health Reform, a Cancer Offers an Acid Test). His litmus test is different than the typical ideological one, which focuses on whether or not a public plan is included. For him, its how well the solution deals with the cost of prostrate cancer treatments. In particular, hed like to see the various prostate cancer treatments the costs of which range from a few thousand dollars for watchful waiting to $100,000+ for proton radiation therapy subjected to comparative effectiveness research and have incentives aligned to encourage cost effective treatment. Right now, the problem is that there is an incentive to perform more costly treatments and little information on whats best.
Yet there is a more fundamental issue, which could be addressed by scientific innovation rather than health policy wonkery. And that issue is the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer. Now, men undergo PSA tests followed by biopsies when the number looks bad. Those biopsies can be traumatic and are often inconclusive, leading to more tests, lots of worrying, along with treatments that are often unneeded, expensive and harmful (impotence and incontinence anyone?)
A big problem is that some men thought to have slow-growing early stage prostate cancer as described in the article can end up dying from the disease. And thats the main reason why such aggressive, costly treatments are pursued.
A better emphasis for health care reform would be to focus on providing incentives for the development and deployment of sensitive, specific diagnostic tests that can help determine whether treatment is needed and if so, which treatment is right for the particular individual. What we want to avoid are tests that just add to the uncertainty driving up costs for testing, consultation and treatment while producing more worry.
We should be able to finance even the most expensive treatments when needed if we can determine when they really are needed.

So I'm back on the 6 week makeover plan. I followed it 4 years ago when graduating college and starting my first cubicle job led to a 25 lb weight gain. I like it because its small meals throughout the day so I'm always eating, just smaller portions. I also like that since the meals are all measured, it encourages you to prep the majority of your meals one day a week which makes it so easy - you just grab your food for the day and you're on your way. We usually cook dinner each night, but breakfast and lunch are prepped a head of time.

I'm Body Type B - As a Body Type B, your body builds and maintains lean muscle easily, which is good because muscle burns fat. Unfortunately, your metabolism is significantly slower than many of the other body types and that causes you to gain weight. The rate of your metabolism is the primary consideration in how your body gains or loses weight. The good news is: As a Type B, since you have plenty of muscle tissue to help you burn fat fast, once you use your custom eating plan to speed up your overall metabolic rate, you should see results extremely fast and have little trouble keeping the weight off after the program is done.

So for example - I eat some fruit (like 1/4 of a canteloupe or 1/2 C of strawberries, peach or berries) and 3 egg yolks for breakfast at 6am. Then at 9:30 I eat the same thing again. At lunch I have about 3 oz of grilled chicken breast, 1/2 C of carbs (sweet potato, gnocchi, quinoa or rice) and 1-2 cups of veggies (usually a salad). At 2:30 I each more chicken and carbs, then at dinner I each meat (fish, chicken or beef), carb and a big salad. Then for dessert I can have fruit again.

I refer to this as a very simple way of eating. Not because follwing the plan is 'simple' but because the foods are so simplistic - no prepackaged food, no sweets, no dairy. Just grilled lean protein, complex carbs (no bread) and fruits and veggies. And lots of water.

They tell you to aim for 100 oz a day. I've managed 75 the first two days and am off to a horrible start today, but like I said, I'm tired and I need coffee. And I cannot drink coffee black so I added a splash of creamer. I am not perfect on plan, but my goal isn't to stick to the program perfectly, it's to lose weight, and in order to do that, I need to stick to this for awhile and I know I'll quit if I deny myself everything and go on plan cold turkey.

We'll see how it works...

If anyone is interested in the program, feel free to complete the free blueprint here. Tell me what your result is and I'll help you with your meal plan.

I'm thinking about going into internal medicine, but I'm not sure if I'm the correct "material." This fall I will be entering my junior year of high school. I currently have a unweighted GPA of 3.68, weighted at my school my GPA is a 4.1. My pre-ACT score was a 28, so I'm in the 93 percentile. I have also taken advance courses for math, science and english for the pass two years and I plan to take more. I was wondering if this is enough and what I have to do for the my next two years to get into the medical profession.
Answer:
What medical school admissions committees look for
Most pre-med advisors will probably agree that maybe 70% to 80% of the admissions decision depends on your GPA and MCAT scores alone (since these are given much emphasis). However, there is more to the admissions decision. The weight placed on different aspects of your overall application varies by school. Some medical schools place very heavy emphasis on the MCAT and don't consider much else, while other schools almost completely ignore MCAT scores unless they are very low. Instead they may place all their emphasis on extra-curricular activities and a well-rounded application.
Generally, the following are the main areas used by admissions committees to evaluate candidates:
1. GPA
2. MCAT scores
3. Application material
4. Recommendation Letters
5. Personal Interview
Note that recommendation letters are written by people (usually faculty, physicians or managers) who have interacted with you in extra-curricular activities or in the classroom. Therefore, these really reflect how you did in the activities that you listed on your application and what type of person you are. (See the recommendation letters section for details.)
The personal statement of your application, the personal interview and recommendation letters all have one thing in common: They allow the admission committee to get a glimpse into your personality, your character and give them an overall impression about you. Numbers on a page are meaningless by themselves. Most applicants have a good GPA and at least a decent MCAT score. So, some of these other factors are just as important (or even more) than your scores and grades.
Your application, scores, grades and recommendation letters will get you the interview. Your personality, character and the overall impression you leave at the interview will get you the spot in the class.

Your activities demonstrate your commitment to the admissions committee. All these extra activities look good on your application and may make it stand out from the rest.
Perhaps you could also argue that most everyone does those things, so you really can't stand out. Reverse that thought: All the more reason to do them so you are not behind your competitors.
And: Not all applicants do these, so you have a chance to stand out.
You can pick one area that you really like and spend way more time there to stand out. If you love research, try to invest years there instead of months. If you love shadowing, (like me) put in hundreds of hours instead of 20 hours only. If you can't stand out everywhere pick one area to do it.
